WHAT’S HAPPENING RIGHT NOW IS SERIOUSLY EXCITING.
It concerns our deck. And in all seriousness, this really is seriously exciting: we’re tearing it down.
Actually just the top half, the part that is “screened-in.” The door is missing and parts of the screen have been patched with chicken wire so it’s entirely worthless as a screened-in porch, hence the quotation marks.
Here are some more photos of our deck, taken during the winter:
The deck is on the back of our house, thankfully, because it’s a travesty. This deck makes me swear a lot.
Look at those tall spindly legs! They’re rotting through; there’s one you can even wiggle like a loose tooth. I could go on and on about how ugly and unsafe this deck is. It doesn’t take a building inspector or any of our friends who know stuff to tell us—no, it’s just common sense—that it has to go.
But all of that doesn’t even matter; the reason the deck has to be addressed right now is its roof. The deck’s roof was built on top of the house roof, and we’re getting a new house roof, and this will just not do.
So Jamie and our hired handyman spent a day and a half sawing and pounding and tearing that crap down.
Light was shining through the sliding doors into the living room! It’s always been so dark in there, and now it’s not—a miracle! Angels singing! It already looks and feels SO MUCH BETTER.
But the work continues….
